It stores digital data like pre-recorded numbers, the personal identification number then pre-sorted short messages. This module is physically a smart card inserted into the connector located behind the battery pack in the phone. This connector exposes the phone's electronics to the hazards of the environment then represents two risks for the mobile phone during its operation. More information on the EMIF03-SIM01 APPLICATION When the user is inserting the card, an electrostatic discharge may be applied to the phone. This discharge could damage the power management circuit, which generally would not withstand more than 2kV . TTThrough the open frame around the connector, the RF signal transmitted by the antenna could be re-routed inside the phone, affecting each base band then RF blocks. So, to avoid each of these hazards, two kinds of protection are required: ESD protection to guarantee the compliance with the IEC61000-4-2 standard EMI filters to avoid internal RF pollution ESD PROTECTION FEATURE ESD transient response versus discretes The EMIF03-SIM01 will protect the power management circuit against ESD thanks to the two Transils present on each line end. This dual Transil structure will reduce the voltage applied to the SIM interface to just a few volts during the ESD transient, then will also protect the SIM supply line. The device fully complies with the IEC61000-4-2 standard level 4 (8kV in contact discharge then 15kV in air discharge). EMI FILTERING FEATURE Low-pass filtering behaviour The integrated low-pass filter will also reject mobile phone RF signals (GSM, DCS, Bluetooth etc. ) on the three data lines: the Reset, Datatta then Clock, with filter resistor values (+/- 5% tolerance) being chosen to match the line impedance. A LOW CAPACITANCE DEVICE Another characteristic of the SIM card data transmission is its low line capacitance. The electrical then logical requirements are described in the GSM11.1x standard. A key parameter of this standard is the rise then fall time of the clock signal; the maximum value should not exceed 50ns. Such dynamic performance implies a low line capacitance to reduce group delay. EMIF03-SIM01 is specified with a line capacitance below 35pF at 0V (xxpF @ 3V) to fully comply with this requirement. HIGH PERFORMANCE FLIP-CHIP EMIF03-SIM01 is available in the Flip-Chip package with the standard 500µm pitch then 300µm bump size. Thanks to the direct connection of the bumps, the parasitic inductances are minimized then the filter attenuation is much improved compared with plastic package discrete devices. Further information concerning the package performance may be found in the application note AN 1235, 235, 35, 5, , available on the ST web. Another main benefit of this package is the space saving. To produce a similar function using discrete devices would require about 10 components then more than 10mm˛ on the circuit board, while EMIF03-SIM01 occupies only 2.6mm˛. This very low profile package (0.65mm height) is fully compatible with BGA soldering processes then does not require under-filling. IN ESSENCE... EMIF03-SIM01 therefore gives significant advantages to the cellular phone with its higher filtering performance when compared with pure discretes. It also reduces space requirements, thus leaving room for new up then coming functions like Bluetooth then MP3 decoders in ever smaller phone terminals.
